The Four Steps of a Personalized Soccer Training Session

As a soccer coach, I usually get the following texts or emails at Rudy’s Soccer Academy, “help, I’m a new soccer parent and I don’t know where to start,” or “I have no soccer knowledge…can you help me out?” Rest assured, I have got you covered and can help get your child up to the soccer speed they need for a successful soccer season.

Step 1: Find a Coach

The most important thing when beginning your soccer training sessions is to find a soccer coach you and your children will connect to. In my training style, I focus on a player-centered approach and tailor each session to fit your child’s needs, as well as practice technical excellence skills players can implement while on the field.

Step 2: Access Soccer Ability

The next step is to determine where your child’s soccer level and knowledge is. Usually, I will discuss with the parent if your child has played soccer and for how long and have the parent rate their child’s soccer skill level-beginner (plays with friends or for fun), intermediate (plays on a team), advanced (plays for a club team or multiple years). By determining your kid’s soccer ability, I am able to start planning drills for us to work on during their training session.

Step 3: Tailored Soccer Session

After we have determined your child’s level of soccer ability, I design a customized lesson tailored to meet the needs of your soccer all star. When we meet on the field we will begin with a quick intro and get to know each other. We will then move into a warm-up to make sure the body is ready for some soccer work. I focus on speed and agility work and incorporate foot work because great footwork is fundamental. We then work on dribbling and passing and dribbling and shooting drills.

Step 4: Constructive Criticism

The final step in the personalized soccer session is constructive criticism and create goals for our next session. Constructive criticism provides players with specific, actionable feedback that helps them identify areas for improvement. By understanding their weaknesses and strengths, players can work on targeted skills, leading to continuous personal and professional development.
